Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece after Athens. It is a very young city, on the one hand because the student population is very important thanks to its numerous universities but also because everyone feels young in Thessaloniki. People like to live outside and can spend hours on the terrace drinking coffees and remaking the world. There are always many people outside, the atmosphere is very warm and relaxed. The city is very safe and quite small, you can easily move around on foot day and night. Besides, it is one of the best places to party in Greece. Don't miss the waterfront and the White Tower, they are the symbols of Thessaloniki. You can see the White Tower from almost everywhere and it is a good landmark in the city. Walking along the promenade along the sea is really pleasant. Walk along the city center, pass by the White Tower, it used to be a prison in the 19th century and now has an interesting museum of the city's history; and at the top you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole city. Then extend the walk a little further to this beautiful modern sculpture: The Umbrellas! We don't go to Thessaloniki for its ruins but we are in Greece so there are inevitably interesting archaeological sites in the city center. You can start with the Agora which dates back to the 3rd century BC, it was the public square during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Do not miss the Arch and the Rotunda of Galerius, Roman monuments of the beginning of the 4th century, built by the emperor Galerius. The Rotunda was used as a church and then as a mosque, that's why it has a minaret, it is currently under renovation but you can still go and see it. Go down the nice pedestrian street Dimitriou Gounari to see the ruins of Galerius' palace. There are many interesting museums in Thessaloniki. To understand the history of the city, start with the archaeological museum, nice inside and outside where there are mosaics. Then continue with the museum of the Byzantine culture, brand new museum, superb exhibitions and very well presented. If you are a film fan then don't miss the film museum, in a restored old port warehouse, it is small but cheap and gives information on how to make films and on Greek cinema. In the same building, there is the museum of photography.Another nice museum is the museum of the Olympic games. It traces the history of the games since antiquity and presents a collection of objects of all the games since its rebirth in 1896 in Athens by Pierre de Coubertin.
