In Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah is a celebrated figure because of the impact of his time as head of state. Inside his memorial is his mausoleum. He is buried there with his wife Fathiah Nkrumah. Designed by Don Arthur, the mausoleum is in keeping with the greatness of the figure. On the tomb is an upside down sword, a sign of peace. Covered with Italian marble from top to bottom, it is surmounted by a star expressing unity. A shaft of light illuminates the entire tomb, reflecting the beauty of the building.
To give the figure a sense of immortality, the mausoleum is surrounded by water.
