🗼 LandmarkLocated in the north of Germany, Lubeck is a beautiful port city with a rich history and culture. It was once an important area of the Hanseatic League called the 'Queen of the Hanse'. The former capital of the Hanseatic League, the powerful trading organization of medieval Germany, is without doubt the most beautiful historical city in Schleswig-Holstein. With its imposing old town and major works of Nordic red-brick Gothic, Lübeck is also a lively and pleasant city.
Burgtor is the northern gate at Lubeck. Built in 1444, it is one of only two remaining medieval gates with the original four gates. The gate is named after the castle on the side of the River Trave. In this area there are surrounding buildings and the Romanesque tower. The medieval gate with its final Gothic architecture is beautiful, although it has modern paved roads for cars to enter. There is a plaque here stating that Napoleon visited the city in 1806.
Buddenbrookhaus is an elegant neighborhood in Lubeck, built in 1758. It houses the famous writers Thomas and Heinrich Mann across from St. Mary, almost completely destroyed in World War II bombing, only the facade remains. The house was rebuilt unlike the original, but had a facade and a museum honoring Thomas Mann built in the back.
The Romanesque church of Lubeck was built for the bishops of Lübeck dating back to the 12th century. The magnificent church is one of the oldest monuments in Lübeck but an altar and several sections were destroyed in the air. The remnants of World War II have a large crucifix and many beautiful medieval paintings.
The Lübecker Rathaus is one of the most beautiful and important city halls in Germany, especially brilliant at night, built in 1230 and later enlarged. The hall is open to visit daily. There are entrances and courtroom doors that you should be aware of when passing with pickpockets who can mix with the crowds of visitors.
Travemünde is a seaside resort at the mouth of the River Trave, the end of Lubeck Bay on the Baltic Sea. Founded in 1187, the picturesque beachfront is also a seaport from which visitors can catch ferries to Scandinavia and other Baltic beaches.
Holstentor is one of the two remaining gates of the city of Lubeck, built between 1464 and 1478, considered a symbol of Lubeck with its charming two-tower architecture. In 1863, the gate was extended to the surrounding areas. The gate is located on a subsidence area, sinking a few centimeters every year. Inside the gate there is a museum about the history of the border area from the Middle Ages.
