Learn More about Leipzig

Leipzig is a paradise for art and culture lovers, with a host of galleries, museums and concert halls. The city's history is evident in its Romanesque churches, Art Nouveau buildings and 16th century cellars once frequented by famous composers and poets. Shopping enthusiasts will not be left out with luxury boutiques, department stores, flea markets and small souvenir stores. You'll also find cozy pubs in the city center, amid a multitude of taverns, bars, wine cellars and modern nightclubs. Augustusplatz, Leipzig's largest square, is a great place to stroll among its historic buildings, cathedrals and concert halls. Seasonal markets are also held here throughout the year, in addition to concerts and festivals. One of the tallest buildings in Leipzig is the City-Hochhaus (142.5 meters). On the 29th floor, an observation deck open from 9:00 a.m. offers breathtaking views of the city. If you are a classical music fan, the Leipzig Opera House and the Gewandhaus concert hall are also must-sees at Augustusplatz. The St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) is a Romanesque and neo-Gothic building dating from the 12th century. After being destroyed during World War II, it underwent a massive restoration before being reopened to the public in 2000. Among its most picturesque features are the marble baptismal font depicting biblical scenes, the bronze epitaphs of notable figures and the statue of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. For about 2 EUR, you will be able to attend motet performances by the St. Thomas Boys' Choir, every Friday (6 pm) and Saturday (3 pm).
