⛰️ Hill station spotsBetween the state capital of Hesse, Wiesbaden, and the town of Taunusstein, the federal road 54 crosses the Taunus ridge at the Eisernen Hand. Close to the Iron Hand is the Altenstein natural monument, a quartzite rock from the main Taunus ridge. The rock was dissected from its environment as a "hardener" by intensive weathering in a warm and humid tropical climate in the Paleogene (66-23 millennia before present). In the middle of the 19th century, the Altenstein was used as a quarry. At that time, paving stones were quarried for the new construction of the Aare and Aartal roads in 1854-57. Today's natural monument has therefore lost some of its former size.
