How to visit Cassis ?

Cassis, a picturesque fishing village in the South of France, is an absolute must-visit destination for travelers looking for a charming and authentic experience. With its pristine beaches, stunning calanques (rocky inlets), mouth-watering cuisine, and cozy ambiance, Cassis is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the best of French culture.

To get to Cassis, fly into Marseille Provence Airport and then take a shuttle, train, or rental car to reach the village. It's just a 35-kilometer drive from the airport. Alternatively, you can take a train from other major cities in France, like Paris or Lyon, to Marseille, and then transfer to a train or bus to Cassis.

Booking in advance is crucial, especially during the peak season (June to August). Reserve your accommodations and popular activities like guided boat tours of the calanques or wine tours of the nearby vineyards. Many of the calanques are only accessible by boat or a long hike, so booking a boat tour can save you a lot of time and energy. Also, consider booking a table at popular restaurants to avoid disappointment.

The costs in Cassis are relatively affordable compared to other top French Riviera destinations. Expect to pay around €100-150 per night for mid-range accommodations and €20-40 per person for a nice meal. Boat tours range from €20-40 per person, depending on the duration and the number of calanques visited.

The best things to do in Cassis include exploring the calanques, either by boat or hiking, sunbathing at the beautiful beaches, and wandering through the vibrant streets of the old village. Wine lovers should not miss a visit to the local vineyards to taste the Cassis white wine, which is famous for its distinctive flavor.

For dining, you can't go wrong with La Villa Madie, a Michelin-starred restaurant offering a stunning view of the Mediterranean Sea and exceptional cuisine. For something more casual, try Chez Gilbert for delicious seafood or Le Bonaparte for traditional French fare.

In terms of accommodations, the luxurious Les Roches Blanches offers a fantastic sea view and exceptional service, while the charming Hotel de France Maguy provides a more budget-friendly option in the heart of the village. Another option is the boutique-style Le Cassiden, located close to the port.

Off the beaten path:

For an unusual travel experience in Cassis, take a guided night hike to the calanques under the moonlight. This unique adventure allows you to witness the breathtaking beauty of the inlets in a completely different light. It's a magical and unforgettable way to connect with nature and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast at night.

Learn More about Cassis

Cassis is a commune in the southern French department of Bouches-du-Rhône. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its sheltered inlet and for its white and rosé wines. Cassis is built in amphitheatre on the seaside between the Cap Canaille and the Calanques. The ochre color of the cliffs of Cap Canaille stands out against the white of the Calanques. These two listed natural sites are among the most beautiful on the Mediterranean coast. The Mediterranean Museum of Art and Popular Traditions, housed in a former presbytery dating from the early 18th century, has a fine collection of 19th and 20th century Provencal painters: Ponson, Guindon, Seyssaud... who were also seduced by the light and the enchanting setting.
