🐾 WildlifeHonfleur is a Norman port city of more than 1000 years old. Located in the department of Calvados, on the south bank of the Seine opposite Le Havre, it is known for its Vieux-Bassin, its cobbled streets and its half-timbered houses. The charm of the city made it a popular place for painters who represented the reflection of the houses on the Quai Sainte-Catherine (the "Vieux-Bassin"). It is here that the impressionist movement was born with painters like Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet and Eugène Boudin. The city of painters is ideal for a weekend trip. You can stroll through its cobbled streets and visit its many downtown stores. Don't miss the Vieux-Bassin, Honfleur's must-see site. Built in 1681, it is surrounded by 17th and 18th century houses classified as historical monuments. Another must-see in the city is the visit of the Sainte-Catherine church. It is entirely built of wood from the nearby forest and dates from the 15th century. It is the largest wooden church in France. For those who wish to deepen their visit, several museums are worth a visit. The Musée de la Marine, located in the oldest church in the city, the Eglise Saint-Etienne, honors the past of Honfleur's sailors. The Eugène Boudin museum presents the works of this native painter, as well as other Norman painters. Finally, the Satie houses offer an immersive visit around the works of the famous musician, also native of the city. In addition to these museums, don't miss the majestic Pont de Normandie which links Honfleur to Le Havre with its 2141 meters long and 215 meters high; or visit the salt lofts which were once used to preserve cod. Today, two of the three that existed remain. More recently, a tropical wetland ecosystem, "Naturospace", has been built in a greenhouse in the heart of Honfleur and will appeal to a family audience.
