Spargi is an island of Italy. It is situated in the Maddalena archipelago, in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia. It is the third largest island in the archipelago, and is uninhabited. It is within the Arcipelago di La Maddalena National Park. The landscape is rugged granite, with some porphyry. The island is more-or-less circular. The only source of fresh water is rainfall. The coast is marked by coves and sandy beaches. The hinterland is almost impenetrable. Plant life includes Cistus, strawberry tree, juniper and mastic. During the 19th century, Natale Berretta, an alleged bandit, hid on the island and managed to elude searchers. When his name was cleared, he brought his family over and settled down. The Spargi wreck is a Roman ship 35 m dating from c. 120 BC, discovered in 1939. It was a cargo vessel, carrying amphorae of wine. Finds from it are conserved in the Nino Lamboglia Museum in La Maddelena. Spargi was garrisoned during both World Wars. Some of the fortifications still remain. The ownership of Spargi was the subject of a lightly-contested court case in 2011. The parties agreed that it was worth €127,000.

Learn More about Bonifacio

Bonifacio is a charming medieval town and the oldest town on the Isle of Beauty (another well-deserved name for Corsica). It was founded around 830. The town is located on the cliffs of a limestone peninsula above a natural harbor on the site of a 9th century citadel and combines resort, medieval town, scenery and nearby beaches. All these elements make it one of the highlights of your trip to Corsica.

The marina, the citadel and the old town, as well as the view of the harbor and the surrounding cliffs are the highlights of your visit to Bonifacio, but it is the Mediterranean atmosphere and ambiance that will stay in your memory the longest.

Start your visit with a walk around the harbor, and take the opportunity to admire the yachts and fishing boats that are parked there. With the backdrop of the cliffs and the citadel above, you'll find many bars and restaurants around the harbor (many of them quite expensive), which will quickly put you in the vacation mood! Then climb up to explore the citadel and the historic old town of Bonifacio. Although the climb is quite steep, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the coast! Bonifacio is perched on high white cliffs that continue all along the coast.

The medieval old town of Bonifacio is the oldest town in Corsica and has many high houses along cobblestone streets in a spectacular setting atop the cliffs of the white limestone peninsula. The town is divided into two main parts. The main town is near the main gate, then a walk to the end of the peninsula where there are military fortifications and a cemetery, the southernmost in Europe and one of many cemeteries built in France in beautiful locations on the coast, the perfect place to be buried!

When you visit Bonifacio at night, the citadel and some of the cliffs are illuminated, which gives them a very different atmosphere from the daytime.
