🏖️ Beach 🏞️ Waterway 🌲 Old-growth forestGoderich is a small coastal town overlooking Lake Huron and is known for its beautiful turquoise shores and historic downtown.
It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron near the mouth of the Maitland River. It is also the county seat of Huron County.
Goderich's largest industry has been salt mining, with the first salt mines opening in 1867 after an unsuccessful search for oil revealed a large deposit of rock salt.
Goderich's west-facing location makes it an ideal place to watch the sunset.
For starters, the town has three beaches that stretch for 1.5 km. The first is the main beach, where visitors can take a leisurely stroll along a boardwalk to St. Christopher Beach and Rotary Cove Beach. These beaches are lined with playgrounds and food and drink outlets.
Visitors can also climb the wooden stairs at St. Christopher Beach to visit the Goderich Lighthouse, which sits on the edge of a cliff overlooking a spectacular view of Lake Huron.
Trace Goderich's railway history by crossing the Menesetung Bridge, which spans the Maitland River near the old Goderich Salt Mine and Harbour. The bridge, which once served as a crossing for Canadian Pacific trains, is now a sturdy and well-maintained pedestrian bridge. Visitors who stop on the bridge have a view of the Maitland River and Lake Huron.
Across the river, visitors have the opportunity to follow nearby trails into the surrounding forests. Hikers will enjoy exploring the Morris Tract Provincial Nature Reserve, a 58-hectare park filled with a multitude of wildlife, as well as plant species unique to the area.
Visitors looking for a more leisurely stroll through the flora and fauna can stroll through Harbour Park.
Located at the top of the hill just before the Goderich lakefront, this park is meticulously maintained, with beautiful landscaping and colourful flowerbeds.
The city centre is unique in that it is octagonal in shape, following a large octagonal roundabout. Also known as The Square Heritage Conservation District, it was designed in the mid to late 19th century.
At the heart of this octagon is Courthouse Park and the Huron County Municipal Office and Courthouse.
Not far away is the Huron Historic Gaol, a former prison that operated from 1841 to the 1970s, and has since become a museum. Visitors with a penchant for the phantasmagorical can take supernatural tours of this former prison and hear the macabre details of its history.
Curious about other less scary historical details? The Huron County Museum is another must-see for visitors who want to learn more about Goderich's history through the more than 30,000 artifacts on display.
