Thirty kilometers south of Jasper, the Athabasca Falls, measuring 23 m high, are among the most powerful in the Canadian Rockies. The falls are located on the high cliffs of the Athabasca River and are used to produce the extremely powerful currents of water that flow through their narrow gorge. It has been observed that even on cold mornings, the water in the river flows at an ever-accelerating rate. Tides have created the narrow gorge and numerous potholes that define this part of the Athabasca River. It is also a great place to commune with the forces of nature! The hike to the falls is quick and easy. Many trails lead to the waterfall, making it an easily accessible tourist site. The effects of erosion, of which they are the actors over time, are spectacular and you can observe the flow of water pouring over this layer of quartzite that has formed an impressive canyon and giant potholes for years.
