Travel Tips for visiting Angkor Wat

A historical site of the country's culture

The archaeological site of Angkor is located in the rainforests north of the Tonle Sap, on the edge of Siem Reap town. This immense complex is made up of numerous vestiges that bear witness to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. It was between the 9th and 15th centuries and Angkor was the imperial capital. At its peak, this incredible city had nearly a million inhabitants! However, the reasons for its collapse remain mysterious.
Visiting the temples of Angkor allows you to grasp the full power and complexity of the Khmer Empire. You will discover numerous vestiges, whose art dazzles with its beauty and its refinement. The stones are mixed with a luxuriant jungle, which seems to want to smother a sulfurous past. It is as if you have discovered the ruins yourself. This unique atmosphere strengthens the immersion. On your way, you will pass Hindu and Buddhist temples. Among them, the most famous, Angkor Wat, is considered the eighth wonder of the world. The temple of Angkor Wat is the emblem of Cambodia. It is even featured on the country's flag.

Several options for the visit...

If you want to visit the site with a guide you will have to contact a travel agency or a dedicated association as the site does not provide official guided tours. Another option is to visit the site by bicycle. The site is large, 400 square kilometers, and you can rent a bicycle for a day at a low cost
The tuk-tuk tour offers a balance between the first two ideas. It allows you to be quite free, as you decide where to go. But it also allows you to be accompanied on the tour! Of course, tuk-tuk drivers do not tour guides. Nevertheless, some of them know the history of the site very well. They will be able to guide you to visit the temples of Angkor. Finally, the tuk-tuk can take you directly from your hotel to the temples. Alternatively, a hot air balloon ride will allow you to see the whole site in one look. An unusual way to visit the temples of Angkor, which brings you up close to the clouds! The experience is usually offered by Angkor Balloon. A hot air balloon flight will remain engraved in your memories, areal moment of escape during your trip to Cambodia. You will even have the opportunity to contemplate the beautiful Cambodian countryside around. This experience is even more beautiful at sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers planning a trip to Angkor Wat

How many days does it take to visit the temples of Angkor Wat ?

In only one day in Angkor, you will not see many of the temples of Angkor: 2 or 3 ruins of temples at the most, which you will visit at a fast pace... It's really a pity!

If you are in a hurry, two full days in the archaeological zone will allow you to appreciate the great must-sees of Angkor. Indeed, two days can be enough as long as you visit Angkor with an experienced guide. The latter will also be able to suggest an optimized tour. If you don't have a guide, you will need to know your tour and timing inside out.

Spending a week in the area is really the best way to take your time. You can spend a few days in Siem Reap, and the rest in the archaeological zone. This will allow you to soak up the atmosphere of the place without running around, and also take the time to alternate with beautiful discoveries in the dynamic region of Siem Reap.

The problem with visiting Angkor Wat is that it is very crowded. Indeed, there are a lot of tourists, so it is advisable to visit this temple last, on the last day of visits, and after 2 pm, so you can have a nice view of this wonder of the world in all tranquility.
