Natural landscape spots 🌲 Ecoregion spots Landscape spots 🌲 Plain spotsBotswana's Chobe National Park is only the third largest in the country, but one of the most concentrated wildlife parks in Africa, despite its vastness of 11,700 square kilometres.
This is its primary advantage, which attracts travellers looking for a dream safari.
Located in the far north of the country, it marks the border with Namibia. But it is also in the immediate vicinity of the Okavango Delta, which allows it to enjoy a splendid natural setting with lush vegetation.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Chobe region was populated by the Basarwa, a people of San descent. Over the years, they were joined by the Basubia and the Sekgona. But when the British settlers arrived, their land was divided. The Crown decided to create the Chobe National Park in 1931. The stated aim was to preserve 'indigenous and wild life' while promoting tourism in the area.
Thus, hunting was banned and the protected area was gradually expanded. It was only after a major invasion by Tse-Tse flies that Chobe was granted nature reserve status in 1960. All the people were relocated to protect the impressive ecosystem and create what is now Botswana's most visited site.
Any visit to Chobe National Park in Botswana is centred around safaris. As in the vast majority of African national parks, it is possible to go on classic 4×4 safaris. In your specially designed vehicle you can travel the length and breadth of Chobe National Park.
However, Chobe National Park in Botswana also has its own unique activities. For example, it is possible to go on a photographic safari. The concept is very simple: you will join a team of professional photographers, who will take you to the heart of the park to teach you the art of photographing wildlife. It's a unique way to experience wildlife and take home great memories.
You can also experience a boat safari, which is actually a cruise on the Chobe River. This is a great way to see the animals drinking on the riverbank, while enjoying the calm of the water.
Finally, the Chobe National Park in Botswana also offers a Fly In Safari option. Instead of doing your safaris on the ground, you do them in the air, in small planes of about 5 seats. Your charter can take you from your lodge to the most remote areas of the Chobe Park.
It is entirely possible to stay within the Chobe National Park. Indeed, many lodges are available, which will allow you to live an original experience and be in total immersion in the nature reserve.
