Visually, Baku has a striking appearance, full of contrasts: next to Soviet-inspired buildings and towering skyscrapers, the old town of Baku has preserved its remarkable buildings. Dating from the Middle Ages, they are part of the World Heritage of Humanity.
An oil city once dedicated to extraction, Baku remains an important economic and industrial centre.
As a gateway to trade, its port is a pillar of its economic activity, while its bay irresistibly attracts tourists.
You can start by visiting Fountain Square. Located in the heart of Baku, this aptly named square offers the soothing sound and coolness of water.
C It can also be flooded with people during public events and cultural festivals.
Then continue on to visit Gobustan Park. A natural gem, Gobustan National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features some 6,000 rock engravings, some of which date back 40,000 years.
You can also admire the curves of the Heydar-Aliyev Cultural Centre. Designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, the Heydar-Aliyev Centre is named after the president of Azerbaijan from 1993 to 2003.
Completed in 2013, its curved white building is a spectacular break from the city's prominent Soviet architecture.
Don't hesitate to go to the Maiden Tower. A local landmark, this ancient construction was restored during the medieval era. At 28 metres high, it offers a panoramic view of the city and houses a small museum on the history of Baku.
During your stay, don't forget to visit the Shah's Palace.
Completed in the 15th century, the Shirvanshah's Palace is the other focal point of old Baku. A masterpiece of national architecture, it dominates the city from its hill.

To have a good holiday in Baku, it is best to avoid the hot summer months, when the temperature can rise above 40°C.
The best times to visit the city without breaking a sweat are between April and June and September and October. In winter, however, many tourist attractions remain closed.
To get to Baku, simply land at the city's Heydar Aliyev International Airport, located about 30km from the city centre.
To get around Baku, the city is served by bus and metro, which has two lines and 21 stations.
