Learn More about Gyumri

In the northwest of Armenia is Gyumri, the second largest city in the country after Yerevan. Occupied since the 3rd millennium BC, the city has a rich historical past. It came under Russian rule in 1837 and was renamed Alexandropol. It is from this period that it really develops. In 1924, during the Soviet period, it changed its name once again to Leninakan, before being renamed Gyumri in 1991. The traces of this occupation are still visible in the city. However, Gyumri has managed to preserve an authentic Armenian architecture dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, which is quite rare in the country. It also survived the terrible earthquake of 1988, which destroyed 60% of the city. For a tour of the city, go to Kumayri, the historic district where you can see Armenian architecture and unique buildings such as the Poloz Mukuch Beerhouse and Araks Hotel. Right next door you will find the huge Vartanants Square. This is surrounded by several important buildings, including the Church of the Holy Savior, the Gyumri City Hall and the October Cinema Hall. In the middle is the memorial of the battle of Avarayr. Don't miss the house-museums, especially the one of the Aslamazyan sisters. It is the most popular in Gyumri with its collection of 700 drawings and paintings. If you want to learn more about the past of the city's inhabitants, visit the Dzitoghtsyan House-Museum. Here are exhibited objects showing the daily urban life of the city. And for the epicureans there is the Gyumri Open Air Market. Here you will find spices, dried fruits and fresh products that will immerse you in the local gastronomy. Finally, if you have some time, you should know that about 40 minutes drive north along the Turkish border, there is a beautiful viewpoint in the city of Ani: the Ani Overlook. Photography is not allowed, but the view of Turkey and the Akharian river is worth the detour.
