Travel Tips for visiting Jujuy

The province of Jujuy is located in the extreme northwest of Argentina,

On the border with Bolivia and Chile. Its name may not ring a bell, but this province concentrates within it an incredible variety of tourist sites.

This is largely due to its three different geographical areas, which form breathtaking landscapes, all very different from each other.
In the province of Jujuy, we find the Sierras Subandines, the Puna (very high region of the Andes, between 3,500m and 4,800m of altitude), and finally the Cordillera Oriental.
The region of Rio San Francisco is an exception in this very arid region since along this river, we register quite important rainfall rates.
By going to this beautiful Argentine region, you will not be able to miss the village of Purmamarca

Then, you will be transcended by the remarkable colors of the Serrania de Hornocal, but also by those of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.
If you want to learn more about the Jujuy region, why not take a trip to the Salinas Grandes?
It is a huge salt flat of 12000ha located at more than 3300m of altitude.
This small salar is located less than 200km from San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital of the province.

Visit Purmamarca and its places of interest

The village or "pueblo" of Purmamarca is located in the canyon with the same name, where the Purmamarca River flows.
The most interesting thing about Purmamarca, apart from being the gateway to the famous seven-colored mountain, is its church.
The church was founded in the 17th century as a tribute to Santa Rosa de Lima. Inside, we can admire beautiful paintings of the school of Cusco but also impressive objects of art.
This church is classified as a National Historic Monument.

Purmamarca is located at a little more than 2 200m of altitude.
In the main square of this charming village, Plaza 9 de Julio, you can find local handicrafts and medicinal plants. In addition, in this same square, there is a very old tree that dates back more than 500 years!
Purmamarca is famous for its local festivals, starting with the celebration of the "Pachamama" in August, the homage to Mother Earth.
This folklore that is attributed to Purmamarca is a reflection of the folklore of the entire region.
One meets their pre-Hispanic traditions mixed with Indian traditions and the traditions of the gauchos also.
Whether the population is religious or not, these celebrations are shared by all, they are not an object of the past, but festivities anchored in the daily life of the inhabitants of Purmamarca.

Visit the "Cerro de los siete colores" (the mountain of seven colors), near Purmamarca

This seven-colored mountain in the province of Jujuy in Argentina, near the town of Purmamarca, is recognizable by its tones ranging from orange to purple, especially when the sun's rays are there to reveal its amazing colors. This beautiful rainbow of colors has been produced by a set of natural elements that have formed the geological history of this place and therefore a concentration of marine, lake, and river sediments, coupled with tectonic movements.

From the small town of Purmamarca, you can walk to the Cerro de Los Siete colores using a short hour walk.
The best time to go there is at the very beginning of the day when the sun rises and the first rays of the sun reflect on the rocks and highlight this beautiful Argentine mountain.

Visit the Hornocal Forest (Quebrada de Humahuaca)

The Serranía de Hornocal, also called the Quebrada de Humahuaca, is a group of mountains crossing a total of 3 countries: the province of Salta in Argentina, the Bolivian altiplano, and reaching Peru. The highest point is at about 4700m of altitude.

What is most striking about these limestone mountains is their impressive colors. They are in fact minerals, which, with the erosion, have given way to an incredible variety of colors.
You will surely be dazzled by this extraordinary landscape!
Take the time to contemplate not less than 33 tones going from the ochre to the yellow while passing by the white by places...

The Mirador del Hornocal, the most famous, is located a little less than 30km from the city of Humahuaca and then, you will have to wait some 40 minutes, the time to reach this mirador on foot. This majestic and silent spectacle can also take us back in time since the Inca Trail also extends not far from this beautiful "serrania".
