🌲 Plain ⛰️ MountainBerat is a municipality and commune in south-central Albania, south of Tirana. It is the capital of the previous district of Berat and the prefecture of Berat.
The town of Berat is located about 50 km from the Adriatic coast and at an altitude of 58 metres above sea level, in a hilly environment, on the banks of the 161-kilometre-long Osam River, which runs through it. Gorica, the Christian quarter, is located on its left bank, while on the right bank are Mangalem, the Muslim quarter, and the Kala, a fortress on the heights of Kalaja Hill.
Berat's population is approximately 65,500 people.
The juxtaposition of Catholic, Orthodox and Muslim places of prayer testifies to the ability of the different communities to live together. Walking through the small streets whose light-coloured cobblestones wind between very old walls, one can pass from the Church of Saint Theodore to the Cathedral of the Dormition, then to the Red Mosque.
Perched on the slopes of the mountain, the Citadel catches the eye. Its white houses, its thick walls and the castle that overlooks it will transport you to another era.
The famous hike in Berat is the hike to the top of the Citadel.
