❄️ Glacier ⛰️ Hill 🏘️ Town ❄️ Glacial landform ❄️ Glacial lake ⛰️ Mountain rangeOne of the largest mountain vacation, sports and conference resorts in the Alps, as well as the highest city in Europe (1,560 m). Today it is known worldwide for hosting a major international congress, the World Economic Forum, each year. One cannot reproach the congressmen for the choice of the site: less flashy than Saint-Moritz, less picturesque than Gstaad, less of a resort than Montreux... in short, one can possibly believe that they do not come only for vacations. Thanks to the notoriety of this event, congresses are now held all year round and hotel occupancy has not dropped dramatically out of season. Davos is therefore a congress town and is equipped accordingly, with 1,100 tourist beds. Founded in the 13th century by the Walsers, German-speaking Valaisans, Davos owes its tourist development to Dr. Alexandre Spengler, in the mid-19th century, who described the virtues of its dry climate and pure air in treating tuberculosis. At a time when antibiotics were not yet available, people came to the numerous sanatoriums in the resort, including the one in the present Youthpalace. There are still several institutes in the city that specialize in the treatment of respiratory diseases. Despite this and the presence of 100 farms handed down from father to son, tourism is the mainstay of the town, accounting for 70% of the economy. With 254 km², Landschaft Davos is the second largest municipality in the country. The municipality, with 11,200 year-round inhabitants plus visitors, is divided into 5 sections (Dorf, Platz, Frauenkirch, Glarus and Monstein). Davos also became known through Thomas Mann's controversial novel, The Magic Mountain. The writer was inspired by a visit he made in 1912 to describe the world of the sanatorium, which he did not fail to make fun of, which obviously could not please the Davosians.
